Charmaine Ball’s work is a response to structural elements encountered in the built environment. Formal geometric composition is paired with an organic approach that imbues a liveliness to abstraction and points to the interior realm.

Obdurate rises from the ground, an inverted pyramidal form – sections protruding to create angular edges. Chalkily unglazed, the sculpture evokes the materiality of Brutalist architecture and the concrete bunkers of World War II – structures that barricade and confine.

Tolerance, an assemblage of 33 individual clay pieces, deconstructs the permeability of Brutalism. Space left between groupings creates shadowed lines, injecting expressive movement within the gridded composition.

about the artist

Charmaine Ball’s practice is a response to structural elements encountered in the built environment. Architecture and materials – forms, angles, shadows– provide impetus for response. Spanning painting and sculpture, an exploration of line, shape and colour characterises her work. Formal geometric composition is paired with an organic approach that imbues a liveliness to abstraction and points to the process of making and the interior, emotional realm.
